July 16, 1945 – The Trinity test, the first ever detonation of an atomic bomb, took place in New Mexico as World War II raged across the globe. In the top image, we see the exposed wiring of “The Gadget,” the nuclear device that went boom in the desert. In the second and third photos, we see the Trinity explosion .025 seconds and then 9 seconds after detonation.
