BORN ON THIS DAY – Cosmonaut Georgy Beregovoy, born on April 15, 1921. A veteran of the Soviet air force with 185 combat sorties during the Second World War, he became a test pilot after Germany’s defeat, flying some sixty different prototype planes over the next decade and half. After he was accepted into the Soviet Union’s cosmonaut program in 1962, Beregovoy went on to command the Soyuz 3 space mission in 1968, orbiting the Earth for almost four days. At the age of 47, he was the the earliest-born human to rocket into outer space. In 1969, he was traveling in a motorcade with Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and other cosmonauts when a Red Army deserter opened fire on them. The assassination attempt on Brezhnev’s life failed, but several cosmonauts, including Beregovoy, were lightly wounded. Later that year, he visited the United States as a guest of NASA. In the company of Gene Cernan, Neil Armstrong, and others, Beregovoy took in the sights at Disneyland, Hollywood, and beyond. He passed away in 1995.
